Founded in 1870 within what was then southern Upshur County, Longview became an incorporated town the following year. With the formation of Gregg County in 1873, Longview secured its position as the county seat through a popular vote. In the present day, Longview stands as a significant central city in the region, sharing this status with the neighboring city of Tyler. Considered by many of the pilots that compete at the Great Texas Balloon Race to be the best run event on the circuit, the Great Texas Balloon Race earned Longview the official designation as "The Balloon Capital of Texas" by the Governor of Texas in 1985.
GREGG COUNTY HISTORICAL MUSEUM Chartered in 1964, the Gregg County Historical Museum is now home to a very rich history for the Longview community to experience. Our permanent exhibits offer basic history of Gregg County, rotating exhibits and large events throughout the year. If you're in the area and looking for something to do, consider diving into history at the Gregg County Historical Museum. Our business hours are: Wednesday - Friday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
The holiday season officially begins in Downtown Longview with the lighting of the 23.5-foot Christmas tree at Heritage Plaza. The annual tradition features pictures with Santa, music, carriage rides, petting zoo, snow play area, food trucks, and vendors. The event is hosted by the Longview Main Street program in conjunction with the Downtown Longview nonprofit One Hundred Acres of Heritage and is made possible thanks to sponsors.
